Plyometrics and the runner

Why bouncing, hopping and jumping deserve a place in every serious runner's program — and how to introduce them without breaking yourself.

Running is, at its core, a series of single-leg jumps. Every stride asks the muscles, tendons and connective tissue to absorb force and return it — quickly. So it makes sense that plyometric training is one of the most underused tools in a runner's toolbox.

Why plyometrics matter

  • Tendon stiffness — better elastic return means less metabolic cost per stride.
  • Rate of force development — quicker contact times, faster turnover.
  • Injury resilience — tissues that have been exposed to high-rate load tolerate the demands of running better.

How to introduce them safely

The most common mistake is jumping (literally) into high-intensity plyos before the body is ready. A simple progression looks like:

  1. Bilateral, low-amplitude — pogos, ankling, double-leg hops in place.
  2. Bilateral, higher-amplitude — broad jumps, depth drops.
  3. Unilateral, low-amplitude — single-leg pogos, alternate-leg bounding.
  4. Unilateral, sport-specific — repeat hops for distance, deceleration drills.

Spend two to three weeks at each level before progressing — and never run a heavy plyo session the day before a quality run.

Bottom line

If you're a runner who's never done plyos, you're leaving free speed and durability on the table. If you have an injury history, even more reason to start — under guidance.
